A Few Reasons I Heartily Disagree With Gay "Marriage"

Note:  I'm going a bit off-topic from what I usually post, but this is still a subject I feel very strongly about.

The other day, I read a blog post by a girl who claimed to be a Christian, but then proceeded to defend gay "marriage."  (If you're wondering, I put quote marks around marriage because marriage as ordained by God is between one man and one woman, which means that same sex marriage is in fact, not marriage.)  You can read the post here: http://fictionandtea.blogspot.com/2015/06/love-wins.html

After reading it, I began to write a comment outlining some of the things I disagreed with, while trying to be polite.  Well, I ended up writing a little more than I expected, and when I was finished, my comment was so long that it wasn't able to be published, so I emailed it to the author (Bethan) instead.  She hasn't responded yet.

My sister requested that I share my comment on my blog, so that is what I'm doing now.  Make sure to read Bethan's post, and also the comments, to fully understand what I said in response.  I wrote it kind of with the assumption in the background that she is a Christian, since she said that.  However, I do not really think she is.

Without further ado, here is my somewhat scattered response to Bethan's post, "Love Wins."

"Hey, I found your blog through http://bananaandbear.blogspot.com/, and I was just looking around here a little and came across this post, not surprisingly, since it's the second to newest.  :P

I wanted to comment just a few things that I disagree with you on, but please don't think that I'm trying to be mean or anything like that.  I respect your opinion as a fellow human being made in the image of God.

1.  God's Word does not have any contradictions in it.  It was breathed out by God to chosen men who were inspired by the Holy Spirit, and it therefore has no errors in it, in it's original text.  Translations may have some grammatical errors and such, but the original writings have no error whatsoever.  Indeed, there are many instances where it seems like there are contradictions, but if you dig deeper into to original meaning etc., there are none.

2.  God clearly states in the Bible that it is sinful and punishable by death to be a homosexual.  You mentioned that nowadays, it would be socially unacceptable to burn someone at the stakes for that, and that's true, but it is because Jesus has already paid the price.  He paid the price for our sin by His death on the cross.  If we repent of our sin and turn from it, we have life, but those who will not turn from their sin will be cast into the lake of fire.  I don't mean to be snooty or anything.  But that's what will happen to those that don't put their trust in Jesus and turn from their sin.  Continuing to live as a gay without even a desire to kill that sin is basically telling God that He can't tell you what to do (I'm saying you generally, not you personally).

3.  "Loving freely," as you put it, is not actually loving freely, because it is going against what God has ordained, so it is really imprisonment, whether it feels like it or not.  It is so freeing to live in the light of Christ, no matter how hindering it seems to the world's eyes.  The world's vision is clouded because they don't have the light of Christ - they are living in darkness.

4.  I am totally against discrimination [as the word is used today].  It is not looked on favorably by God at all.  However, I do think it is very important that we address this issue with gays.  Not get in their faces and force them by violence to give up their sinful practices.  Our job is to love them the way Christ loves, and then by that, lead them to Christ, by His grace.  It is never an option to discriminate against them because of their different beliefs.  As for the blacks and whites marrying thing you were talking about, I do not believe that is wrong.  What's wrong is when someone has any sort of romantic inclinations toward someone of the same sex.

5.  In the Bible, women are NOT seen as inferior.  A lot of people make that mistake.  As my old pastor said, Christianity is the only religion where women and men ARE equal.  People get tripped up because men and women have different roles.  Equally important roles!  When Paul says in Ephesians 5:22, "22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything," he's not saying that a man can make his wife do whatever he wants because he rules over her.  No, he is to love, care for and guide her in the same way that Christ loves the church.  In fact, right after that, Paul says, "25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[a] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies."  The husband is not to rule over the wife like a slave master or something like that.  He is to care for her, love her, so that he is continually improving her, and cleansing her.  In turn, the wife is to submit to him as to Christ.  The husband should love the wife in a way that makes the wife love to love him!  The same goes for the wife - that she should love him in a way that makes him love to love her!

6.  People are not "born gay."  It is a choice to go against God's law, whether or not it feels like it.  God created us male and female, with the "instinct," if you will, to be attracted to the opposite gender.  That is God's perfect design.  When one tries to go against that, they are breaking God's law.  In addition, when you support this in any way, you are breaking His law.  Going back to His perfect design, men and women are not the same!  He created us different, with different strengths and abilities!  It was His plan that men be attracted to women and vice versa.  It is right and good for that to happen!  It's true that we cannot control our race, gender, or things we were born with.  We are born either male or female, and we cannot change or control that.  But we can control our thoughts.  Being gay is a brain thing, not a genetic, out-of-your-control thing.

7.  Yes, as Christians we do strive to love unconditionally, but that does not mean that we let people wallow in their sin!  That is not loving them!  Loving is hard to do sometimes, and it takes guts.  When you claim to love someone by letting them "believe what they believe," and not bothering them about it, what you are actually doing is letting Satan get a firmer hold on their soul.  You are bringing them closer to eternity in hell.  That is a scary thought.  True love would be to bring their sin to their attention so that they may turn from it and turn to God.  Jesus loved us unconditionally by dying for our sins - when we hated him!  He didn't say we had to do anything to earn His love, He did it willingly.  He didn't love us by just letting us wander wherever we wanted.  That wouldn't be love!

I'm sorry, I didn't really mean to go this long.  I just wanted to point out a few things I noticed that I [heartily] disagree on.  The things I said weren't really in any particular order.  And again, please don't take this as offensive or mean.  I want you to know where I stand, just like you want people to know where you stand.

~Maggie "

I wrote that late at night, with minimal or no editing, and that's why it's kind of all over the place.

I would also like to add that if you are truly a Christian, it means that you have repented, and are now striving, by God's grace, to turn away from sin and the ways of the world, and to more and more conform to the image of Christ.  The Bible clearly states that homosexuality is a sin.  Therefore, to agree with it or support it in any way is to turn away from God, which is, obviously, not Christlike.  Now, that is not to say that Christians don't sin.  Ha, far from it!  But as Christians, we have a new life in Christ, and ought to be constantly working to kill sin.  In this present world, there will always be sin, and there's nothing we can do about that, but Jesus will carry us through when we do sin.

You are welcome to comment with your own thoughts on this subject, or anything I missed.  Just remember to keep your comments respectful and polite.  Thank you!

    2. I admit that if I wasn't a Christian I would be a strong defender of gay "marriage". I once asked my mom why God is against being gay. I'll never forget her response: (after a small hesitation)"I...don't know honey. Some Christians support it, but the thing about the Bible is, you can't pick and choose what you do and don't like. The thing that really hit me hard when I wasn't a Christian and the thing that haunted my days until I gave my life to God, was that you CANNOT be lukewarm. Because that's just as bad as being completely cold." (Revelation 3:16)

    3. I used to wonder too, and why wouldn't you? It's gonna come up sometime, in thought, if not out loud. The response your mom gave is perfect though. We can't know the reasons to everything God commands, but He commanded, and we cannot disobey (without a penalty). And exactly right about being lukewarm too - it's no better than being cold. Thank you for the comment [I know who you are!].

  2. In response to your “blogpost”
    • It’s not fair to name the author of the original post – why are you targeting her?
    • 1. Contradictions: just to name 1, Matthew says Joseph’s dad was called Jacob, Luke says he was called Heli.
    • 2. If you think people deserve to be “cast into the lake of fire”, how do you reconcile that with the teachings of love?
    • 3. It’s none of your business if other people are religious
    • 4. You don’t agree with discrimination, but you just hate someone because of who they are?
    • 5. So women submit to men, but are not inferior? That doesn’t make sense.
    • 6. How do you know if people are born gay / choose it if you are not gay?
    • 7. There are so many sins in the bible. I eat shellfish. Should I go to the fiery lake too?
    • Finally – you’re a mean person to have framed this as a personal attack against another blogger.

    1. Hello, "Innocent Bystander." Gotta say, innocent bystanders don't normally get involved. You're not a bystander anymore. You're involved. I have some responses to your comment.

Maggie is not "targeting" the author of the original post. She's simply responding to Bethan, and some people happened to think that that response would be beneficial to others, so she posted it on her blog. And she did it very respectfully and politely.
      1. Here is a very good response to that "contradiction."
      2. Let me explain this for you: Jesus existed in love and harmony as a member of the Godhead since before time began. He was perfect, high, and holy. When God created humans and they sinned, He could have just destroyed them then. He had every right to. He had created them, sustained them, and loved them. Instead, He chose to sacrifice His OWN perfect Son. He loved us enough to do that. So Jesus became human, and lived a sinless life on earth. Finally, He was cruelly and unjustly killed on the cross. But the worst pain wasn't the nails being driven through His hands and feet, or the spear stabbed through His side. The worst pain was being ripped away from His Father as a multitude of sins were thrust on Him. As He cried, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" He had never been separated from that holy communion before. God turned His face away from Him because of how much He loved US. And after all that, you still think that anyone who sins, who willfully rejects God, doesn't deserve to be cast into the lake of fire? God freely offers grace to us. All we have to do is accept. Which we can't do without His grace. We are helpless without Him. He created us.
      3. So you think we should just stand back and let people give their souls to Satan? You say Maggie doesn't love others, how do you explain yourself?
      4. I'm sorry, WHAT? Did Maggie ever say she hated anyone? She hates SIN not people. Hate the sin, not the sinner.
      5. Submit in love. The man's role is to be the leader. Do you think we are at all inferior to the president just because he has a different role than we do?
      6. First of all, I'd like to say it's definitely not a genetics thing. But it's a human thing. Some people struggle with certain sins more than others do. Some people have more of a temptation to steal, some to lie, some to act out in violence. It's not a sin to struggle with those things. It's a sin to give into them, and homosexuality is no different in that respect...
      7. However, some sins are worse than others, and homosexuality is a much worse sin than most others. Also, many things that were forbidden to the Hebrews are allowed to us now by the grace of God. Homosexuality, however, is something that goes contrary to the very nature God created. It denies the order He made, and that's why it's such a horrible sin.

Finally - I find your closing remark rather juvenile, especially as it's dead wrong.

      Delete
    2. 1. What's the reason then? Genuine interest in solving this contradiction.
      2. So people who sin do deserve to be thrown into the lake of fire? Thanks for clearing that up.
      3. Yep. It's their soul. Not your business.
      4. If you tell gay people "You're sinning, it's a bad sin, you're going to hell" - do you think that makes a person feel loved or hated?
      5. Yes, we are inferior to the President. That's kind of the point.
      6. I'm sorry, I didn't realise you were a genetics expert. Do excuse me. I wonder if during your professional research you have come upon the most recent studies, that suggest a biological reason may be present for homosexuality? There is no definite scientific answer at present. http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2014/11/22/are-you-born-gay-or-is-it-a-choice-scientists-might-have-found-the-answer/
      7. Yes, some sins are worse than others. Why don't you spend your time writing posts about the 10 commandments? Surely non-Christians are the biggest sinners of them all - I suggest you fix that first, then move on to homosexuality.

How would you feel if you found a public blog post that denies your faith? And that person also emailed you, I'm assuming to tell you again that you're not a 'proper' Christian? I'd say it's a target to judge how "good" or "bad" a Christian is, especially when you don't know them. I'd say it's pretty mean to frame an opinion post in that way.

    4. Thank you Anna, for stepping up and defending me. I really appreciate it.
      (to Innocent Bystander)
      1. Anna just answered that in the last comment.
      2. Yes. Sinners do deserve to be thrown into the lake of fire. Absolutely. The thing is, Jesus already did it for us. All we have to do is accept His grace. I'm basically reiterating what Anna already said, except she said it much better.
      3. Again, I can't say this any better than Anna did. It's their soul, and I suppose you could say it's none of our business, but it would be utterly selfish not to at least warn people. If you don't think that would be selfish, you don' understand what hell is like. Plus, Jesus told us to go out into the world and witness to others. That's what I strive to do.
      4. Obviously, that's not going to make someone feel loved. But I did not even say that. I stated my opinions on the subject, and said that if you do not come to Christ, you will go to hell. That's just the fact of the matter. But there's no reason why anyone should not come to Christ! His grace is absolutely free! Those who sin the most will find the most grace in Him.
      5. Um, we apparently have different views on this...along with a few other things.
      6. I'm sorry for my stubbornness, but I don't really believe that.
      7. In case you didn't know, I actually write about crafts usually, not anything having to do with this stuff. That's why I don't spend time writing on the Ten Commandments. And by the way, I actually disagree that non-Chistians are the worst sinners. Maybe they commit bigger sins (not always though), but the only difference is that Christians have seen their sin, and their need for saving, by God's grace. It's not like we are able to see our sin by our own strength. Which brings up another thing I was going to say to you: it's not my job to "fix" anyone. God does that. He uses us, but He is the one who changes hearts.

I'm sure that have many public blog posts already that deny my faith. I may be a little hurt, but Christians will always be persecuted in this world. I can't even honestly call that persecution though.
I was not emailing her to tell her she's not a "proper Christian." I was simply emailing her with my differences of opinion on the subject. I tried to make it polite and respectful.

“Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbor; I am the LORD.”

Marriage as ordained by God is not just between 1 man and 1 woman - see Jacob, married to Leah and Rachael (also with children by Bilhah and Zilpah), and Abraham, married to Sarah and Hagar simultaneously. God sanctions marriage and relationships other than the definition you acknowledge.

Also, why do you care what others believe, if they're causing no harm to you?

    1. Matthew 19:4 He (Jesus) answered, “Have you not read that he (God) who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

God never told Abraham and Jacob, and also David and Solomon, to take more than one wife. They didn't consult God when they took more wives. God showed us the ugly consequences of having more than one wife.

Other people beliefs don't cause harm to my faith, but it causes harms to themselves. It is the duty and mandate from the Lord Jesus to true Christians to tell the truth about what is in the Bible. If you argue again what truth is, I'll simply say, "Go read the Bible, the one in good translation. Or better, read the one in Hebrew and in Greek."

  6. "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

    LOVE WINS

    1. Exactly: love wins. Jesus' love for us already has won, and because of that, I want to show my gratitude by showing my love for Him, which is what He commanded anyway, as you kindly reminded me. Thank you. :) One way I can show that love for Jesus is by witnessing to the world, as He commanded. Loving my neighbor is one way to love God, and also a way to witness. When I warn people about the folly of their ways, especially in a loving way, as I tried to do, I am loving them better than if I just sit by and let them wallow in their sin. Even if what I say doesn't seem to do change their heart in any way (it's God who changes hearts anyway, not ordinary human beings), I have obeyed God by witnessing to them. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for stopping by.

    2. The voice of reason, tell a good reason why and how Maggie and Anna should be eaten by gays? Are you implying that gays are cannibals? That is a really good new addition attribute to the gays which I don't think they would agree. Maybe you should have this reason in Isaiah 1:18 "Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool." If the voice of reason of this culture is as unreasonable as the person behind "the voice of reason", then we will expect a doomed culture. Just compare the statistic of STD and HIV patients 10 years ago and now. It's the fact that none of the people of "the voice of reason" like to know or want to admit.

  10. Maggie Groover-
Sorry for commenting late as well :) I also feel strongly about this topic and would like to comment.. I would like to say that you express your opinion very well in this post, it is not disorganized at all!!
However, I would also like to mention this: You say that you love Christ the King, but may I mention that Christ himself never says homosexuality is a sin anywhere in the Bible?
Lastly, I hope that though you are against homosexuality, you will accept it if those close to you are homosexuals, and love them because they, like you, are human, and do not choose to "sin."
James 4:12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you- who are you to judge your neighbor?
Again, this was very well-written, so kudos to you!

    1. Thank you for your comment! I don't mind the lateness at all.

I do love Christ the King with all my heart. Even though Jesus may not say homosexuality is a sin anywhere in the Bible, God the Father clearly did, and so did Paul, by the Holy Spirit's leading. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are three in one. One cannot say something that either of the other can disagree with. Therefore, even if Jesus never specifically said that, He surely agreed with them, and did not condone homosexuality.

Of course I will love those who are homosexual - close or not! That's the point of this post (or one of the points), that I love these people so much I can't just stand by and let them wallow in their sin. That wouldn't be love. Even if nothing I say stops them, I tried. Hopefully God can use my words to His glory and to advance His kingdom. As to what you said about "accepting" them if they are homosexual, yes, I will still accept them as a friend. By God's grace I'm not going to abandon them, but I cannot and will not accept their sinful actions against God. That would be sin on my part. We as Christians are called to fight against the flesh, not to just let it be if it's too hard of a struggle.

Yes, absolutely. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge. Praise be to God that I am not that Lawgiver!

    2. Hi hello, so you asked where in the Bible it says that homosexuality is a sin. I have a few verses here:
Leviticus 18:22, "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination."1
Leviticus 20:13, "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them."
1 Corinthians 6:9-10, "Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God."
Romans 1:26-28, "For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. 28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper."

      With respect.

  12. Hello, Maggie
I found your blog via a Wordpress blog, (http://concealedfoundation.com/2016/03/06/where-i-stand-on-the-subject-of-gay-marriage/), and would just like to say that I read all of this and would like to say thank you.
I see people coming at you, with no logic, blindly lashing out- and you keep God's Word with your words, and you also (even though this was written late, lol, I really think everything good I ever write is best done when its past dark and my brain is dead. xD Is it just me?) have really well put truths.
This is a subject that is pretty harsh nowadays, but it certainly is not a new matter to God- its been around way longer than the 21st century. Disagreeing with something/someone, suddenly represents hating or judging them. This is incorrect, of course, but it seems truth means nothing and is tossed away. Its truly sad- but even today, the Lord knows what the future holds. He knows our paths- and I agree with you. We are called to tell the truth- and whether the world likes what God has to say or not, that's not up to us, nor is it our entire responsibility.
You made some points and gave some ideas that are true, that I had never really thought about. Thank you! This subject was one I had a strong opinion about (I knew it is wrong, and God says so), but you gave me pointers I had not thought off. :)
I'd also like to fully agree with the fact that the Bible NEVER contradicts itself. To pick pieces of the Bible to believe and follow, ignoring other Laws, etc- is basically playing God. And none of us are God- we can't just nit pick our way to please and be accepted...
God says a lot of what to expect. Lots of the prophecies are coming true- what is wrong is right, what is right is wrong. Things are written all in the Scripture that hold today in the light and show the truth...
I could go on and on, but I just wanted to say: These sort of things about the truth, people don't like a lot, sometimes. I really liked this post (or comment. Goodness, this very comment is so long, I apologize... xD), and thank you for speaking out with the Words of God and a very smart approach. Great job. :)
    God bless,

  13. Angela! Thank YOU! It is so nice to meet yet another person who backs me up on this issue, because it means so much more than just backing ME up - it means you love the Lord, as is evident anyway by your comment! You know, it is much easier to respond in a Christ-honoring way when it's only online and not in person, but I do hope that if the opportunity comes where I need to talk to someone in person about this subject, I can respond in the same way.
That is so true - people think that just because you don't agree with them on something big like this, that you're automatically their enemy. It doesn't need to be that way! Yes indeed, God knows what the future holds and He knows our paths.
Ha, I didn't realize I had SO much to say on the subject until I read the post that made me want to comment everything I said in this post! The Lord truly was guiding my words.
I don't mind your long comment! Thank you so much for your comment, Angela!

    1. Thank you Victoria. :) It is indeed a touchy subject, and I might not have even wrote that long comment in the first place of it wasn't late at night! And thank you for pointing it all back to Christ! He gave me the words to speak. Thank you for commenting!

  15. Hello Maggie,
I also found your blog through Concealed Foundation's post, and even though this is extremely late, I just wanted to say thank you so much! God truly gave you the words to respond in such a wonderful way. I wish I could phrase my thoughts as you did yours! I am sorry for the rude comments that you received, but I applaud you for the respectful and wise words that you responded with. This is a subject that many Christians avoid responding to, so I'm so glad that you did!
    Blessings,

    1. Oh Emily, thank you for your sweet comment! I'm glad you commented, even though it was late! I really don't mind late comments at all. :) I guess I expected that I would get some rude comments, but maybe not like what I got! I don't think I would have been able to respond the way I did if it was in person (something I need to practice in case the chance comes!). Thank you for commenting, Emily, and I'm checking out your blog right now!

  16. Hey Maggie! I found your blog on Concealed Foundation as well. I must say, I'm sorry all these unnecessary comments have come through to you. Be strong in what you believe. You're right. You explained it SOOO much better than I ever could, so thank you for making a bold, controversial stand against something SO clearly of the devil. We all have to remember that Jesus was bold and controversial too!

  17. Well, it's to be expected, isn't it? It's nothing to be ashamed of anyway, if I'm getting these comments for being a follower of God! And that is true - Jesus was also bold (although I wouldn't call myself that)! Thanks for commenting, Elle. :) (Checking out your blog now.)

    1. Haha...I'm not sure whether or not I'm supposed to laugh...? I have the feeling you didn't mean it as a joke, so I'm doing a half-hearted, confused sort of laugh. Heheh. Anyway, thanks for the comment. :P

    2. How do you address this? Are they all going to hell with the gays too?

    3. Okay, so you were serious... Um, well, I don't believe that animals have souls, so I don't believe they go to heaven or hell. (Some Christians think differently.)

    4. In animals, if they are "gay" it tends to be a dominance thing, or they imprinted on the wrong parent as a young animal. I know this is an old post, so sorry for adding another comment, just wanted to go ahead and address that :) plus, even if animals do go to heaven or hell, they are not capable of evil, and God didn't necessarily tell the animals to follow the same rules we have. They are to keep us safe, not to keep us from having fun. God wants what is best for us.

    5. Thanks for clearing that up, Amelia. :) You know a lot more about animal behavior than I do. ;)

  19. Dear priest ogidiga, Thanks for everything. You are the best among all the spellcasters I tried these last months. They gave me little results but none of them did what you done. I hardly believe this but you just fulfilled my dream.
